I was just talking about Interstellar the other day. That scene on the water planet is probably the most anxiety-inducing thing that's ever been put to film.

I think about it regularly. It's one of those films that got unfairly bypassed for more serious awards (best picture, director, screenplay, etc.) in my opinion. The Truman Show is another one.

It's a wild ride, Joel. Checked out some Geotic while I was editing. Love it!

Mark D and I share a publisher and I saw an early manuscript of the novel. It felt as big, to connect stuff in this post, as the monolith in 2001. I still haven't read it. I haven't even attempted. On a side note, Mark D's sister, who goes by the name Poe, is a singer/songwriter. She had a few songs hit the mainstream back in the 90s. You might remember this one. It's a good song!

Great stuff here!

For music: I was deep into electronic music in the late noughties and early 2010s, so I recommend any of the Bedrock compilations, which feature Jon Digweed, Satoshi Tomiie, Hernan Cattaneo, etc. Your mileage may vary on specific tracks, but you'll find a lot to like. These are great to write to as well.

Even better for writing are any of the movie/TV show soundtracks by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. In 2020, when I still used Spotify and was finishing my first attempt at a novel, I ended up as a top 0.01% listener to those guys.

Also, as a little swerve, Pink Floyd's "Animals" is an outstanding, underrated album, with long, weird, instrumental sections that make for incredible ambient listening.

Alien is still the scariest movie I've ever seen. I just watched Guardians with my kids and they loved it. So much heart.

thanks for the ambient music recs, Amran! And yeah, I do love The Social Network soundtrack, but I haven't listened to any of the other ones by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross!

All their soundtracks are great. Social Network is probably the best (or best known), but Watchmen, Gone Girl, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Before the Flood all feature incredible pieces of music.

Some of my favorites are included in this playlist: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/writing-jams/pl.u-qxylEY6s0JLY7
