boygenius, “$20”
The millennial answer to Audioslave, boygenius consists of three songwriters at the top of their game. Lucy Dacus, Pheobe Bridgers, and Julien Baker are all current pillars in the American indie music scene. For those who aren’t aware, their decision to join forces would be akin to JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, and Denis Villeneuve making a sci-fi together.
“$20” leaves nothing on the table. The confessional/defiant lyrics encapsulate their generation’s despair in a way few songs have managed. All three women are up at the mic, singing their souls out. It’s the kind of song that sells concert tickets.
